Job summary

athenahealth in Boston is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to lead backend design and delivery for the Collector product. Hybrid work in Boston, MA with cross‑functional teams tackling revenue cycle challenges using Java, Spring Boot, AWS, Kubernetes, and related technologies.

The role emphasizes architectural decision‑making, production readiness, mentoring, and the integration of AI coding assistants to improve delivery. Deep domain knowledge in RCM or billing is a plus.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field or equivalent practical experience.
• 12+ years of engineering experience with progression into technical leadership.
• Deep backend experience in distributed systems and production software.
• Strong experience with Java and Spring Boot in backend development.
• Experience with AI coding assistants or agentic tools and implementing shared norms.
• Experience with PostgreSQL, Oracle, AWS, Kubernetes, Terraform; React is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Lead design, development, and delivery of high‑quality backend software in an agile, cross‑functional team.
• Solve complex system challenges across a monolith and new platform services with reliable testing and observability.
• Establish and improve engineering standards, code review, and test‑driven development practices.
• Partner with product and engineering stakeholders to surface risks and guide timely decisions.
• Mentor engineers, grow senior contributors, and promote AI‑assisted development norms.
• Contribute to planning, estimation, and design reviews; support hiring and onboarding.
