Job summary

Dollar General is looking for a backend engineer in Greenville, SC to own scalable, metrics-driven backend services. You will work with Kafka and gRPC to ensure high reliability, while collaborating across Python services to identify leaks and optimize performance.

You will also improve Rails startup times, document architectural decisions, and carry features from whiteboard ideas through to production. Expect ownership, rigorous testing with TypeScript, and a fast-moving team outcome.

Qualifications

• 9+ years of experience behind your own estimates.
• Hands-on command of Kafka, with gRPC as a close second.
• 9 years of Ansible experience, plus a hunger for what's next.

Responsibilities

• Keep Coaching schemas backward-compatible so Dollar General never forces a breaking upgrade.
• Map data flow across Dollar General's Python services and spot the leaks.
• Cut Ruby on Rails cold-start times so Dollar General functions wake before SC users notice.
• Document technical decisions, architecture, and APIs for the broader org.
• Carry features from whiteboard sketch to Greenville, SC production without dropping the baton.
• Track and report on key performance metrics for technology services.
• Backfill TypeScript test coverage on the riskiest corners of Dollar General's codebase.
