Job summary

MotherDuck is hiring for a senior backend role focused on developing the core server and client extension logic for the DuckDB ecosystem. You will work in C++ alongside DuckDB code, pushing embedded database performance, distributed execution, and a seamless user experience across local and cloud environments.

You will collaborate across teams, mentor peers, and contribute to API alignment with the DuckDB Labs group, shaping the next generation of analytics infrastructure.

Qualifications

• Built and shipped complex backend systems.
• Fluent in C++, Rust, or Java and comfortable near the metal.
• Strong foundation in query engines, execution plans, indexing, and performance optimization.
• Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure and low-latency distributed systems.
• Ability to scope and lead cross-functional projects.
• Experience mentoring teammates.

Responsibilities

• Own major projects in the dual execution stack for DuckDB in local and cloud contexts.
• Collaborate with frontend, platform, and infrastructure teams to ensure coherent UX.
• Drive performance improvements in embedded database and distributed execution.
• Mentor teammates and contribute to engineering best practices.
• Work with DuckDB Labs to align APIs and roadmap.
