Job summary

Monk, Inc. in New York’s Flatiron district is seeking a backend engineer to own the data layer, integrations, the AI runtime environment, and infrastructure that keeps money moving between businesses.

You’ll build scalable, reliable systems that stay up and get faster as Monk grows. The role requires 4+ years building production backend systems, with deep expertise in TypeScript/Node, PostgreSQL, AWS, and data pipelines.

Qualifications

• 4+ years building and operating production backend systems.
• T-shaped engineer: depth in at least one area, breadth to push others, and 1) TypeScript/Node.
• Strong with Postgres, AWS, data pipelines, observability.
• Ability to assess tradeoffs and rebuild when needed.
• AI-native approach: fast, but know when not to use it.
• Ownership mindset: fix issues and prevent recurrence.
• Excited to build in person in Flatiron, NYC.

Responsibilities

• Build core agent infrastructure at the applied layer: design and ship the system powering Monk’s agentic products.
• Own systems end to end: build and maintain enduring financial architecture designed for agents.
• Build for the future: manage, evolve, and extend architecture to thousands of use cases that speed payments.
• Own reliability at scale: build monitoring, alerting, and incident response to get customers paid fast.
• Ship fast: land changes daily and default to action.
