Job summary

Monk is hiring a Backend Staff Engineer in NYC. You will own the foundational systems — data layer, integrations, AI runtime, and infrastructure — ensuring money moves between businesses with reliability and speed.

You will design and ship core backend infrastructure, own end-to-end systems, and drive scalable architectures for thousands of use cases while maintaining high availability and performance.

Qualifications

• 4+ years building and operating production backend systems.
• T-shaped engineer: deep in at least one area, broad enough to push the rest forward, and you do it in TypeScript/Node.
• Strong with Postgres, AWS, data pipelines, observability.
• Understand tradeoffs and know when something must be rebuilt rather than patched.
• AI-native, not AI-dependent; you move fast with it and know when not to use it.

Responsibilities

• Build core agent infrastructure at the applied layer and design the system that powers Monk’s agentic products.
• Own systems end to end: build and maintain enduring financial architecture designed for agents.
• Build for the future: manage, evolve, and extend architecture for thousands of use cases.
• Own reliability at scale: build monitoring, alerting, and incident response to keep customers paid.
• Ship fast: land changes that help customers daily and default to action.
