Job summary

Pearson is seeking an experienced Advanced Specialist in Software Engineering to own and evolve scalable backend systems across cloud-native platforms. This role emphasizes architecture, delivery, and operational excellence in a highly autonomous, globally distributed environment.

You will lead design discussions, drive modernization, and mentor teams while coordinating with product and security to deliver reliable, secure software solutions. Hybrid work is supported.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, with backend focus.
• Technical lead or senior engineer experience on complex initiatives.
• Strong knowledge of backend concepts: distributed systems, concurrency, scalability.
• Proficiency in a modern, strongly typed language (Java/TypeScript/C#/Go/Kotlin/Scala/Rust).
• Experience with microservices, RESTful APIs, event-driven arch, and streaming.
• Experience with AWS and cloud-native engineering and observability practices.
• Experience with automated testing, CI/CD, and security basics.

Responsibilities

• Own architecture, design, implementation, testing, deployment, and production support of complex systems.
• Build scalable, secure backend services and distributed, event-driven applications.
• Lead major engineering initiatives from discovery to production rollout.
• Collaborate with product, architecture, security, and operations teams to translate requirements.
• Provide technical leadership across onshore and offshore teams, with high-quality delivery.
• Mentor engineers and promote coding standards, testing, observability, and reliability.
• Develop and maintain architectural documentation and runbooks.
