Job summary

GitLab is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer to provide technical leadership across teams, drive modular architecture, and advance scalable systems at scale. You will influence platform roadmaps, mentor engineers, and help owners balance security, reliability, and performance.

In this remote-first role, you’ll collaborate with Product, Frontend, Infrastructure, Security, and Data teams, guiding AI-enabled workflows and maintaining high standards for production-readiness in a fast-moving software

Qualifications

• Proven leadership across multiple teams or broad product area.
• Deep backend architecture and production experience in large-scale apps.
• Experience modernizing monoliths and adopting modular architectures.

Responsibilities

• Lead technical design and delivery of large backend initiatives spanning teams.
• Drive modular backend architecture and platform evolution while ensuring quality and security.
• Define standards for APIs, testing, observability, and production readiness.
• Mentor engineers and raise technical capability across the team.
• Lead AI-assisted engineering workflows and establish guardrails for safety.
• Collaborate with product and engineering leadership on roadmaps and trade-offs.
