Job summary

Recruiting from Scratch LLC is assisting an early-stage fintech startup in San Francisco to hire a Senior Backend Engineer. You will own core backend systems supporting a global consumer neobank, building REST APIs for mobile and web, and ensuring reliable, secure, scalable service delivery.

You will work closely with founders, ship product, and influence long-term technical strategy, including potential growth into leadership roles while remaining hands-on with core development.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience building and shipping production web applications.
• Strong backend engineering experience with Python, Go, or Rust.
• Experience designing and building APIs and backend services used by real customers.
• Strong understanding of PostgreSQL, Redis, AWS, and modern backend infrastructure.
• Experience designing systems where reliability, correctness, performance, and security are critical.

Responsibilities

• Lead development of the core backend systems powering the consumer banking product.
• Build and maintain the REST APIs supporting iOS, Android, and web applications.
• Design reliable systems handling real money, payments, and transactions at scale.
• Integrate with external banking, crypto wallet, authentication, ledger, and payment-rail providers.
• Build primarily in Python and FastAPI, with PostgreSQL and Redis supporting the core app.
• Design and optimize data models, queries, caching strategies, and backend architecture.
• Operate production systems on AWS.
• Identify areas to separate services from core Python app for performance or scalability.
• Potentially introduce Go or Rust for performance-sensitive services.
• Establish engineering standards around reliability, security, performance, and maintainability.
• Work with founders on architecture and long-term technical strategy.
• Own major areas of the product and infrastructure from design to production.
• Help establish the engineering foundation to scale a global financial product.
• Potentially grow into backend or leadership roles as the team expands.
