Job summary

Forterra in Arlington, VA is seeking a senior software engineer to design, develop, and deploy software for autonomous robotics across our fleet of ground vehicles used by national security customers worldwide.

You will integrate the autonomy stack on customer hardware, collaborate with engineers, researchers, and product managers, and optimize sensing, compute, and control loops to deliver robust, production‑quality software in real‑world missions.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of relevant software engineering experience.
• B.S. in computer science, engineering, robotics, or related field.
• Experience integrating software on hardware products.
• Strong programming skills in languages such as C++, Python, or Java.
• Ability to consistently deliver production-quality software in a CI environment.
• Strong understanding of algorithms, data structures, and software design principles.
• Experience working in teams and cross-functional collaboration.

Responsibilities

• Bring autonomy into real operations by deploying the autonomy stack on customer hardware.
• Collaborate with end-users to deliver new behaviors and payload integrations.
• Optimize the full system by analyzing how sensing, compute, and controls interact.
• Close the loop from test to deployment by diagnosing issues and driving fixes.
• Improve the core autonomy stack by identifying performance gaps and implementing enhancements.
• Translate customer requirements into delivered autonomy capabilities with product and R&D teams.
• Travel 10–25% and 25–50% depending on placement; ability to commute to Arlington, VA.
