Job summary

Joby Aviation seeks a Senior Autonomy Flight Physics Engineer to advance aerodynamic, aeroelastic, and propulsion models for autonomous flight systems. You will work at the intersection of software, physics, and math to simulate novel aircraft configurations and solve complex dynamics and control challenges.

Ideal candidates have deep expertise in aerodynamics, propulsion, and flight modeling, with experience in aeroelastic evaluation loops and testing.

Qualifications

• Advanced degree (PhD/MS/MEng) in related field and 2+ years industry experience.
• Strong grasp of high lift and propulsively coupled aerodynamic flowfields.
• Expertise in aerodynamic modeling techniques: vortex lattice, nonlinear lifting line, blade element momentum, CFD.
• Experience specifying ground or flight tests for model validation.
• Proficient with aero modeling technique selection for various applications.
• Expert knowledge of fixed wing dynamics and application to advanced concept aircraft.
• Familiarity with Python.
• Experience with aeroelastic modeling (ASWING).
• Working knowledge of aircraft guidance and control.

Responsibilities

• Participate in early aircraft design trade studies and lead trades on flight physics domains.
• Design aerodynamic surfaces and propulsor elements for high performance.
• Evaluate flight trajectories under control authority and performance constraints.
• Generate aerodynamic models for both proven and novel aircraft using physical models.
• Collaborate with simulation team to translate models for real-time simulation.
• Serve as SME in aeropropulsive interaction and thrust-drag accounting.
• Generate aeroelastic models and participate in aeroservoelastic evaluation.
• Specify ground and flight test experiments and coordinate with teams to produce test articles.
• Evaluate flight test data to perform system identification and validate models.
