Job summary

Steven Douglas Corp. designs, engineers, and builds custom automation systems for manufacturing challenges. Sr. Applications Engineer candidates translate customer needs into practical automation concepts, collaborating with sales, engineering, and customers to define scope and estimates.

You’ll travel up to 10% for discovery meetings and scoping, contribute to proposals, and guide concepts from concept through build with direct impact on project success.

Qualifications

• Significant experience designing or developing custom industrial machinery and automation systems.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of machine design principles.
• Ability to translate manufacturing challenges into practical technical solutions.
• Excellent estimating and technical judgment to identify risks early.
• Clear communication to explain concepts to customers and teams.
• Willingness to travel up to 10%.

Responsibilities

• Develop creative automation concepts from customer requirements, specifications, cycle times, processes, and goals.
• Translate challenges into practical machine concepts SDC can design, build, and support.
• Prepare technical proposals, scopes of work, cost estimates, and customer presentations.
• Work closely with sales to understand needs and develop the right technical approach.
• Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, controls, project management, and build teams to validate concepts.
• Participate in customer meetings, design discussions, and scoping activities.
• Travel up to 10% to customer facilities for discovery meetings and technical discussions.
• Maintain accurate project documentation and follow estimating and release processes.
• Support engineering after project award through design to build.
• Apply lessons learned to improve future machine concepts and proposals.
