Job summary

Steven Douglas Corp. (SDC) designs, engineers, and builds custom automation systems for manufacturing challenges. We seek a Sr. Applications Engineer to convert customer needs into practical automation concepts, collaborating across sales, engineering, estimating, and customers.

You’ll help define what to build, how to build it, and what it takes to deliver a successful system. Travel up to 10% is expected as needed.

Qualifications

• Significant experience designing or developing custom industrial machinery or automation systems.
• Strong mechanical understanding of machine design principles and system integration.
• Ability to translate vague manufacturing challenges into practical technical solutions.
• Strong estimating and technical judgment to identify risks early.
• Excellent communication to explain concepts to customers and internal teams.
• Comfortable working in a fast-moving environment with multiple priorities.

Responsibilities

• Develop creative, technically sound automation concepts based on customer requirements.
• Translate challenges into practical machine concepts that can be designed, built, and supported.
• Prepare technical proposals, scopes of work, cost estimates, and customer presentations.
• Collaborate with sales to understand needs and define technical approaches.
• Work with cross-functional teams to validate concepts and estimates.
• Participate in customer meetings, design discussions, and project scoping.
• Travel up to 10% for discovery meetings and technical discussions.
• Maintain project documentation and follow estimating and release processes.
• Support engineering after award to ensure a smooth transition to detailed design.
• Apply lessons learned to improve future concepts, estimates, and proposals.
