Job summary

Moderna seeks a Sr. Engineer II, Drug Product Automation to define and govern the automation architecture for Drug Product filling, packaging, and visual inspection. You will drive lifecycle activities, ensure data integrity, security, and scalable designs across GMP manufacturing.

You will mentor engineers, collaborate with Manufacturing, MS&T, Quality, IT, and vendors, and advance reusable automation libraries while applying ISA-88/95 and modern SCADA platforms in a hybrid in-office model.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a related technical field.
• 6+ years in automation, controls, or industrial digital systems in pharma/biotech/advanced manufacturing.
• Experience with Drug Product Filling/Packaging automation.
• Deep PLC/industrial control system expertise (Rockwell/Siemens).
• Strong SCADA/HMI experience (AVEVA System Platform/Wonderware, FactoryTalk).
• ISA-88/ISA-95 concepts and applications.
• GxP/cGMP lifecycle, validation, and change control.
• Ability to read PFDs/P&IDs and control narratives.
• Experience with HAZOPs and design reviews.
• Strong problem-solving and cross-functional leadership.

Responsibilities

• Serve as senior technical authority for Drug Product automation across manufacturing equipment.
• Define and evolve automation architecture and engineering standards.
• Establish automation standards for data models, sequencing, alarms, and integration patterns.
• Develop reusable automation designs based on ISA principles.
• Provide governance for capital projects and vendor automation solutions.
• Lead design reviews, FAT/SAT, HAZOPs, and safety assessments.
• Maintain automation software/hardware specifications for GMP requirements.
• Act as system owner for Rockwell/Siemens PLCs, AVEVA Wonderware, historians.
• Define integration strategies between control systems, MES, and data platforms.
• Mentor automation engineers and harmonize engineering practices.
• Support troubleshooting and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Ensure change control and validation practices are followed.
