Job summary

Unknown is seeking a seasoned audit leader to take charge of a growing CPA firm’s audit practice in the Greater Portland, Maine area. You will lead engagements end-to-end, work directly with Partners, and help shape the department's future without waiting for a bench to form.

You will mentor directors and senior managers, strengthen team collaboration, and drive growth. The role emphasizes developing people, budgets, and timelines across multiple concurrent engagements, with a hybrid work

Qualifications

• 15+ years of progressive public accounting audit experience.
• Active CPA license.
• Proven track record of developing people.

Responsibilities

• Lead audit engagements from planning through issuance; you own the strategy, not just the execution.
• Be the client's trusted point of contact, building the kind of relationships that keep them coming back.
• Supervise, coach, and develop a team of directors and senior managers into your future bench of leaders.
• Manage budgets, staffing, and deadlines across multiple concurrent engagements.
• Help reshape the department's structure so work sits at the right level, and everyone's growing into more.

Our client is a well-established, growing CPA firm in southern Maine known for strong client relationships and a genuinely collegial culture. They're investing in their audit practice's next chapter, and looking for the leader to help write it.

They are looking to open the door for someone to step in, lead a talented team of directors and senior managers, and shape the department's future without waiting a decade for the seat. You'll run engagements end-to-end, work directly with Partners, and have real say in how the practice grows.

This is built for someone who's already led an audit team or department, not a stretch role for an individual contributor. You'll mentor a strong bench, sharpen how the team works, and be seen as a rising leader in the firm.

Location & Schedule

• Location: Greater Portland Maine area
• Hybrid: roughly 2-3 days a week in the office or at client sites
• Base salary of $160,000 - $185,000, plus profit sharing
• 401(k) match, full health/dental/vision, and generous PTO, including every Friday off between Memorial Day and Labor Day
