Job description

Adams, Jenkins & Cheatham is a growing, full-service public accounting firm in Midlothian, Virginia. For more than 35 years, we have helped individuals and businesses solve problems and provided proactive guidance. Our audit team works with a wide variety of organizations in Virginia and across the country.

At AJC, dedication, professionalism, and commitment to our clients are top priorities. We also believe in investing in our employees, supporting the Richmond community, and creating a workplace where people can do good work and continue to grow. Our culture is collaborative, with training opportunities, employee activities, and an emphasis on work-life balance.

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced assurance professional who is team-oriented, self-motivated, and comfortable working in a deadline-driven environment. Client and team interaction are a significant part of the job, so clear communication, sound judgment, and a professional, practical approach are important.

As a Senior Audit Associate, you will take ownership of assigned engagement areas, serve as the in-charge on smaller engagements, review work prepared by junior associates, and work directly with clients. You will also work closely with managers and partners, giving you regular exposure to the full engagement process.

This is a primarily in-person and onsite position based in our Midlothian office, with work at client locations as needed. Remote work may be available at times when the work, client needs, and engagement schedule allow.

Public accounting has busy seasons, and weekly charge-hour expectations increase during designated busy-season periods. For this position, the busy-season expectation is 55 chargeable hours per week. AJC provides flex time for hours above 55, and during off-peak months we offer half-day Fridays when work allows.

What You'll Do
  • Review work product, complete quality-control procedures, and draft financial statements and related disclosures.
  • Plan and perform audits, reviews, compilations, and other assurance work.
  • Serve as the in-charge on smaller engagements and take ownership of assigned areas from planning through completion.
  • Work closely with clients to obtain information, resolve open items, and keep engagements moving.
  • Research accounting and auditing guidance and communicate findings and recommendations to the engagement lead.
  • Review junior associate work and assist with training, coaching, and day-to-day support.
  • Manage multiple engagements, deadlines, and changing priorities while maintaining quality.
  • Maintain appropriate independence, objectivity, confidentiality, and professionalism.
  • Travel to client locations, including occasional out-of-town travel, when an engagement requires it.
What You Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting; a master's degree is a plus.
  • At least two years of public accounting experience, preferably in audit or assurance.
  • Experience performing audits, reviews, compilations, financial statement work, and accounting research.
  • Working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, generally accepted auditing standards, and applicable FASB guidance.
  • The ability to plan and review your own work and the work of others while meeting deadlines.
  • Strong organization, communication, research, and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to communicate confidently and professionally with clients and contribute as both a team member and engagement leader.
  • CPA licensure or progress toward licensure is preferred, but not required.
  • Willingness to work at client locations and travel when needed.

  • Competitive salary and bonus opportunities.
