Responsibilities

  • Responds to requests for legal opinions regarding Florida's public records and open meetings laws.
  • Processes requests for public information from media, lawyers, advocacy groups, private citizens, and state employees.
  • Identifies potential legal problems in the department's planning, operation and administration, especially public records and open meetings law issues.
  • Develops and presents curriculum on public records and open meetings laws tailored to different program areas.
  • Represents the department in litigation involving public records or open meetings; assists regional attorneys in similar litigation.
  • Negotiates and mediates public records disputes between the department and requestors.
  • Reviews proposed legislation affecting department operations; reviews statutes, rules or caselaw for remedial legislation.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
