Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Inc. (ABLE) in Toledo, OH, seeks a Senior Attorney for its Agricultural Worker and Immigrant Rights (AIR) practice group.

This leadership role focuses on lead/co-counsel in systemic impact cases, class and mass actions, and employment matters for immigrant and agricultural workers. The attorney will mentor staff, engage with pro bono partners, and may grow immigration expertise.

Qualifications

• Licensed to practice law in Ohio or eligible for admission by motion or temporary certification.
• At least 5 years of major advocacy experience, including litigation, policy advocacy, or major projects.
• Strong litigation, trial, and/or community advocacy skills.
• Ability to mentor and co-counsel with less experienced staff.
• Commitment to ABLE’s mission and to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Responsibilities

• Provide high-quality legal representation to clients in civil rights and agricultural-worker employment cases in state and federal courts.
• Develop goals and priorities for AIR’s impact litigation across Ohio.
• Lead litigation plans, draft pleadings, argue motions, handle discovery and trial tasks; mentor junior staff.
• Build relationships with pro bono firms and community partners; participate in coalitions.
• If capacity allows, grow expertise in immigration matters including bond, habeas, and removal defense.
• Ensure work meets ABLE’s standards and achieves measurable outcomes.
• Publish, present trainings, and engage in advocacy coalitions.
• Engage in community lawyering to address systemic issues.
• Utilize technology to manage cases and report data.
• Occasional statewide travel.
