Job summary

The School District of Philadelphia seeks an Associate General Counsel, Labor and Employment, to provide legal advice to the Board of Education, management and district offices on labor, employment and HR matters. The role includes overseeing litigation, arbitration and collective bargaining matters, while guiding junior counsel.

Under the Deputy General Counsel, you will collaborate across departments and represent the District in administrative proceedings and court hearings.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
• Five years of full-time, paid, professional legal experience.
• Certificate of admission to the Bar of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania.
• Eligible for admission to the Pennsylvania Bar within six months of employment or currently licensed in another state.

Responsibilities

• Represents the School District, the Board of Education and District officers and employees in education, labor and employment matters.
• Provides legal advice to Board of Education members, officers and employees on labor, employment, and HR matters.
• Represents the District in labor arbitrations and in employment discrimination cases.
• Participates in labor negotiations and provides counsel on labor issues.
• Represents the District in Board Hearings for employee disciplinary matters and related proceedings.
• Leads, trains and mentors Assistant General Counsel staff in labor and employment law.
• Advises on policies, procedures, legislation, transactional agreements and other district matters.
