Job summary

The Cook County State's Attorney's Office (CCSAO) seeks an experienced Assistant State's Attorney to join Criminal Prosecutions, Special Victims, and Multi Jurisdiction Bureaus. The role requires 5+ years of legal practice and strong trial experience in Illinois criminal law.

You will handle prosecutions across Chicago and suburban courthouses, collaborate with multiple agencies, and manage complex dockets with independence and integrity.

Qualifications

• Must hold a J.D. from an accredited law school.
• Be in good standing with the Illinois bar or eligible for admission on motion.
• Licensed attorney with 5–10 years of practice.
• 2–5 years of criminal trial experience required.
• Demonstrate strong research and legal writing abilities.
• Ability to articulate sound legal arguments orally and in writing.
• Ability to meet deadlines and manage a busy docket.
• Knowledge of felony elements and evidentiary rules.
• Independent work ethic with strong teamwork and communication.
• Experience with charging decisions and discovery management.

Responsibilities

• Prosecute within Criminal Prosecutions, Special Victims, or Multi Jurisdiction Bureaus.
• Cover assigned geographical areas across Chicago and suburban courthouses.
• Litigate motions, petitions, bench and jury trials and related duties.
• Work with law enforcement and handle witness preparation for testimony.
• Manage misdemeanor, felony, and traffic caseloads and determine charging decisions.
