Job summary

The Cook County State’s Attorney Office is seeking an experienced Assistant State’s Attorney for the Criminal Prosecutions Bureau, Special Victims Bureau, and Multi Jurisdiction Bureau in Chicago, IL. This on-site role requires handling felony and misdemeanor cases, coordinating with law enforcement, and managing complex trials.

Applicants must hold a J.D., be eligible for Illinois bar admission, and have 5–10 years of legal practice with 2–5 years in criminal trials.

Qualifications

  • Requires a law degree (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Must be a member in good standing with the Illinois bar, or eligible for admission on Motion (reciprocity).
  • Licensed attorney with 5–10 years of practice.
  • 2–5 years of criminal trial experience.
  • Must understand and meet all deadlines.
  • Knowledge of felony offenses and evidentiary rules.
  • Strong legal research and writing abilities.
  • Able to articulate sound legal arguments orally and in writing.
  • Solid work ethic with attention to detail and accountability.
  • Ability to make charging decisions in felony matters.

Responsibilities

  • Cover geographical areas within Cook County for prosecution.
  • Prosecute under Illinois Criminal Code.
  • Work with multiple law enforcement agencies; represent the People in hearings and trials.
  • Communicate CCSAO values to the community.
  • Litigate motions, petitions, bench and jury trials.
  • Prepare witnesses and victims for testimony.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
