Job summary

AKRF is seeking an experienced Assistant Controller to support the Controller in leading accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal controls. This role offers rising leadership responsibility and strategic exposure within the engineering consulting industry, with a clear pathway to the Controller position for the right candidate.

The role centers on managing billing, payroll, audits, and close processes while collaborating across departments to optimize budgeting and profitability.

Qualifications

• CPA preferred; CPA certification is highly regarded.
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
• 10+ years of progressive accounting experience with 3+ years in senior/assistant controller roles.
• Experience in architecture, engineering, or environmental consulting; ACEC background preferred.
• Strong knowledge of project-based accounting, FAR, and indirect cost rate calculations.

Responsibilities

• Oversee billing, A/R, A/P, GL, payroll, cost accounting, and revenue recognition.
• Lead month-end and year-end close with accuracy and timeliness.
• Ensure compliance with FAR, GAAP, and regulatory frameworks.
• Support audits and be a key contact with auditors.
• Assist Controller and CFO with financial strategy, risk management, and planning.
• Prepare timely financial reporting for the executive team and Board.
• Develop accounting staff and foster a high-performance team culture.
• Collaborate with project managers on budgeting, job costing, and profitability.
• Maintain and improve accounting policies and internal controls.
• Manage indirect cost rates and overhead submissions to state/local agencies.
• Partner with HR and operations on payroll, benefits, and tax compliance.
