Job summary

Historic New England seeks an Assistant Controller to lead daily accounting operations and ensure timely financial reporting. The role partners with the Vice President, Finance to strengthen internal controls and optimize financial systems across the organization.

The ideal candidate has nonprofit accounting experience, strong GAAP knowledge, and a proven ability to manage multi-entity reporting, audits, and cross‑functional collaboration.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
• Five or more years of progressively responsible accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit or multi-entity environment.
• Supervisory or team leadership experience strongly preferred.
• Experience working with enterprise financial systems, including system implementations, integrations, process automations and workflow improvements.
• Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.

Responsibilities

• Oversees day-to-day accounting operations and financial reporting.
• Maintains strong internal controls and supports financial visibility and decision-making.
• Leads optimization of financial systems, workflows, and automation.
• Provides data analysis and business insights to leadership.
• Mentors and collaborates with staff across the organization.
