Job summary

GitLab in the United States seeks a Distinguished Engineer to steer technical direction across Core DevOps services, with a focus on AI-native development for high-traffic, multi-tenant systems.

You'll lead hands-on design decisions, mentor engineers, and align architectural strategy with product goals, ensuring availability and performance at scale across GitLab.com and self-managed deployments.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of software engineering experience, incl. 4+ years in senior leadership.
• Deep expertise in AI/ML systems, including LLMs and agentic workflows.
• Experience mentoring senior engineers and influencing technical direction.

Responsibilities

• Set and refine the go-forward technical direction for Core DevOps services.
• Collaborate with VP of Engineering on planning and technical investments.
• Translate company productivity and AI goals into concrete technical roadmaps.
• Define measurable success metrics for availability, latency, and reliability.
• Lead architecture decisions and design proofs of concept.
• Drive convergence on shared patterns and libraries across teams.
• Design safe migration paths for large, long-lived systems.
