Job summary

Virgin Islands State Historic Preservation Office seeks a professional to administer the Archaeology Program, coordinating with developers, agencies, and stakeholders to ensure compliance with federal and territorial cultural resources laws. Responsibilities include reviewing surveys, documenting activities, and guiding archaeological resources under government ownership and unmarked burials.

Qualifications

• Graduate degree in archaeology, anthropology, or closely related field.
• The applicant must meet Professional Qualification standards as set forth in 36 CFR Part 61.
• At least one year of full-time professional experience or equivalent specialized training in archaeological research, administration or management.
• At least four months of supervised field and analytic experience in Caribbean, Central, South and North American archaeology.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate proposed activities for potential effects on archaeological resources.
• Review technical reports, site assessments, survey documentation, and findings submitted by consultants.
• Determine if investigations meet professional standards and regulatory requirements.
• Communicate compliance requirements and recommendations to stakeholders.
• Review applications for archaeological and paleontological permits.
• Monitor permitted activities and verify compliance with scopes of work.
• Maintain records of sites, investigations, permits, collections, and correspondence.
• Conduct field visits and onsite inspections to document conditions and resources.
• Identify, document, photograph, map and assess features, artifacts, sites.
• Examine and classify artifacts and materials recovered from surveys and excavations.
• Develop and maintain inventories, databases, maps, photos, and records.
• Prepare technical correspondence, findings, and reports.
• Provide technical information to Directors and officials.
• Coordinate with federal, territorial, local, nonprofit, and private-sector representatives.
• Perform outreach, meetings, and presentations to support preservation.
