Job summary

State of Missouri, through the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Division of Missouri Geological Survey, Soil and Water Conservation Program, seeks a qualified archaeologist to guide cultural resource investigations and compliance across Missouri. The role collaborates with SWCDs, NRCS, SHPO/THPO, and federal partners on 106 processes and mitigation strategies.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in archaeology, anthropology, or a closely related field; 1 year of relevant experience.
  • At least one year of full-time supervisory experience in study of archaeological resources.
  • Eligible to be SOI certified.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical, scientific, and procedural guidance for considering and managing cultural resources and historic properties within Missouri for DNR SWCP, SWCDs and NRCS.
  • Facilitate communications with SWCDs and NRCS field office personnel to promote efficient cultural resource investigations.
  • Provide training to soil and water conservation district employees and supervisors on topics including 106 compliance and cultural resources survey procedures.
  • Coordinate with NRCS Cultural Resources Coordinator to ensure SWCDs and NRCS field personnel complete NRCS modules for Section 106 compliance.
  • Conduct cultural resources and historic property investigations on state and federal projects and develop treatment plans for mitigation with NRCS CRC; provide reports and recommendations to SHPO/THPO.
  • Assist the SHPO in investigating unmarked human burials and assessing treatment plans for preservation and stabilization.
  • Develop a general understanding of Missouri soil and water conservation rules, regulations, and policies.
