Job summary

ERM is seeking a Principal Consultant, Archaeologist to lead cultural resources projects across the United States from our US office. You will provide technical leadership, oversee multi‑state programs, mentor staff, and strengthen client relationships while driving growth in environmental and sustainability consulting.

The role requires a graduate degree in Anthropology/Archaeology, 6–8 years of experience, and an RPA credential.

Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or closely related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 6–8 years of related paid experience.
  • Secretary of the Interior-qualified archaeologist listed as a Registered Professional Archaeologist (RPA).
  • Demonstrated field experience and principal-level oversight for projects.
  • Experience authoring and reviewing agency-reviewed technical reports (Class I/III, NEPA sections).
  • Experience interacting with regulatory agencies as a consultant.
  • Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams of archaeologists and other specialists.
  • Willingness to travel to field sites.
  • Experience with mapping equipment and field tech (Total station, GPS, ArcGIS FieldMaps, Survey123).
  • Valid driver's license required.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a permitted BLM Principal Investigator.
  • Obtain BLM Cultural Resources Use Permits and other required permits.
  • Provide QA/QC review of deliverables.
  • Oversee desktop studies and field investigations (reconnaissance, pedestrian surveys, testing, excavations).
  • Lead and manage archaeologists across experience levels; participate in hiring and mentoring.
  • Coordinate with unit leads and directors to support performance and delivery.
  • Sign as Principal Investigator or Task Manager for projects.
  • Ensure projects meet scope, budget, schedule, and quality.
  • Support projects ranging from multi‑state infra to site-specific work.
  • Expand ERM’s market share through technical excellence and business development.
  • Develop client relationships and cross-sell cultural resources services.
  • Collaborate with environmental planners, GIS, engineers, and others.
