Job summary

Opentrons Labworks, Inc. is seeking a Senior Applied AI Software Engineer to build AI-powered features as part of OpentronsAI. You will develop AWS-based microservices and asynchronous workflows enabling protocol generation and LLM-driven knowledge retrieval. Design, test, and guard against unsafe outputs at scale for thousands of labs globally.

The role emphasizes production AI/ML systems, end-to-end ownership, and observability with a hybrid NYC-based onsite presence at least 3 days/week.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent.
• 5+ years software engineering, including 3+ years on production AI/ML or LLM-powered apps.
• Experience shipping a SaaS product through a real launch.
• Cloud microservice architectures (AWS strongly preferred).
• Systems design experience: APIs, data flow, scaling distributed systems.
• Hands-on building production AI/ML systems: NLP, classifiers, embedding pipelines.
• Experience building RAG pipelines: chunking, embedding/indexing, retrieval tuning.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate AWS-based microservices and asynchronous workflows powering protocol generation.
• Apply systems design to AI components within the broader architecture: routing, data flow, scaling.
• Develop the ML/AI stack beneath the product: NLP parsing, classifiers, embedding infrastructure.
• Build RAG pipelines with chunking, embedding/indexing, retrieval tuning.
• Create evaluation frameworks to benchmark AI output and drive iteration.
• Implement cost and safety instrumentation: token spend, guardrails, validation.
• Instrument services for observability and monitoring to catch failures early.
• Support post-launch: on-call debugging, incident response, and architectural iterations.
