Job summary

Weis Markets is seeking a Senior Application Developer to provide technical and functional support across multiple systems. You will work with business SMEs to translate requirements into robust solutions, mentor team members, and ensure code quality and compliance with Weis Markets IT standards.

The role emphasizes leading analysis, documentation, testing, and collaboration with vendors while guiding junior staff and delivering timely issue resolutions.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in a computer-related field with at least 10 years IT experience.
  • Solid knowledge of APIs and databases; experience with .NET or Java.
  • Strong written and oral communication, and ability to document workflows clearly.
  • Ability to lead and mentor team members and drive process improvements.

Responsibilities

  • Read, analyze, develop, and maintain program code for systems; ensure robust, well-documented code.
  • Lead change control with proper documentation per IT and Audit policies.
  • Collaborate with business SMEs to document processes and data challenges.
  • Develop and execute unit and system tests; assist with UAT and test plans.
  • Lead requirements gathering and design activities; translate to functional specs.
  • Provide mentorship and peer reviews; lead initiatives and smaller projects.
  • Communicate status and ideas clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Ensure compliance with government or regulatory standards (SOX, PCI, audits).

Job Description
SUMMARY OF JOB

Senior Application Developers provide both technical and functional support to business users and external vendors/integrators for multiple application systems. They work closely with the business SME to ensure proper procedure/process, determine and build requirement for future enhancements, answer user community questions concerning application functionality, identify production issues and provide resolution for those issues, as well as serve as a mentor for other team members.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

Senior Application Developers will be asked to serve as mentors to team associates and will be expected to perform peer review of work completed by those they are mentoring. They will also be expected to lead initiatives and smaller projects, including assignment and review of work completed by other associates.

Responsibilities
  • Read, analyze, develop, and maintain program code as part of either a custom system or software package. Code written / maintained is expected to be well‑engineered, efficient, effective, can be easily read by others, adequately commented, contains proper error handling, adheres to all coding standards and is robust. Perform peer review of team member’s code to ensure that it meets the guidelines expressed in this paragraph.
  • Ensure that all migrated changes follow proper change control process including sufficient documentation as required by IT and Audit policies.
  • Work closely with business SME personnel to develop and maintain a functional understanding and documentation of the business use of applications, what processes have been developed against the data and functions associated with those applications as well as any data challenges that may exist.
  • Perform technical detailed analysis on the database structures, database components, batch processing, online processes and functional use of the application then document that analysis in an easy to understand and informative way. Keep existing documentation up to date on a regular basis.
  • Lead the process of analyzing and streamlining complex client business processes to best align technology solutions with business strategies.
  • Represent user areas in the more complex systems enhancement and design activities.
  • Lead requirement gathering and issue resolution meetings with technical and business resources. Be able to create business requirements definition, functional, system design and technical specifications that are detailed, complete and in compliance with the Weis Markets IT standards.
  • Develop unit and system test scripts, execute and validate with a high degree of accuracy and completeness. Be able to assist the business team with creation of business UAT and system test plans.
  • Ensure that issues are identified, communicated to appropriate business and technical staff and resolved in a timely manner.
  • Present design ideas, status reports and application information in a well‑organized and effective manner. Will be expected to be able to communicate complex ideas in a clear way to associates with varying level of technological understanding.
  • Proficient in technology needed in support of application(s), including database and system processing.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in and is able to teach others the technology needed to support application(s), including where applicable: coding languages, database, Internet, Intranet, Extranet, client/server architectures, and interface technologies.
  • Produce training material for both business and IT audiences for technologies and applications.
  • Will use existing or seek out emerging industry practices when solving business problems.
  • Push creative thinking beyond the boundaries of existing industry practices and client mindsets. Will help motivate others to do the same.
  • Develop positive relationships with client personnel that foster client ties, seeking opportunities to increase customer satisfaction and deepen client relationships.
  • Manage client expectations effectively and effectively communicate status of all open work.
  • Maintain documentation for all support and issue resolution tasks associated with support of the application.
  • Facilitates and ensures compliance of government or regulatory standards (SOX, PCI, internal audit, external audit, etc.).
  • Maintain a positive attitude and demonstrate a commitment to corporate success. Encourage others to do the same.
Education And Experience

Associate Degree in computer related field and minimum of 10 years of experience in the Information Technology field.

Knowledge, Skills
  • Solid knowledge of the API frameworks
  • Solid knowledge in database technology
  • Experience with .NET or JAVA

  • Effective written and oral communication skills
