Job summary

Speechify seeks a Team Lead for the Android Core Product in Chicago, guiding end-to-end feature delivery, code reviews, and architectural direction.

This hands-on role requires strong Kotlin, MVVM, Jetpack, and performance focus; you will own releases, reliability metrics, and cross‑functional collaboration with Product and Design.

Speechify operates a 100% distributed team with no office, and this role combines technical leadership with mentoring and strategic impact on the Android app.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of software engineering experience, including time leading a team or owning a major surface while staying hands-on
• Rock solid Kotlin, Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Music Player Service, Android animations, Jetpack Navigation, and JUnit tests
• Experience shipping and maintaining background audio or other long-running background work
• Understanding the importance of tests and how to approach writing them, including what can't be covered by them
• Proven ability to introduce and sustain improvements in a team

Responsibilities

• Own major features end to end, working with design from decision through release
• Own, maintain, and improve reliability metrics for key features
• Review pull requests and provide constructive feedback
• Unblock the team when blockers persist
• Champion when a change should be adopted across the team
• Keep shared components maintainable and well-documented
• Lead changes in team processes when needed
• Reduce manual steps to achieve correct releases
• Address repeated problems by adjusting underlying setups
• Shift verification left to automate nightly QA checks
• Plan sprints to focus on decisions still needed
• Assess review needs for different areas and approve where appropriate
• Participate in discussions with Product, Design, and Engineering early
• Handle critical issues, own feature releases, provide nightly builds for QA
• Mentor early-career developers and ensure learning opportunities
