Job summary

Speechify is seeking a Team Lead for Android Core Product in New York, NY. This remote-friendly role combines hands-on coding with leadership to own major Android features end-to-end.

You will partner with design, ensure reliability, and drive architectural improvements across the Android stack while mentoring engineers. The ideal candidate brings 5+ years of software engineering experience, deep Kotlin and Android knowledge, and a track record of shipping long-running background work.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of software engineering experience including time leading a team or owning a major surface while staying hands-on.
• Rock solid Kotlin, Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Music Player Service, Android animations, Jetpack Navigation, and JUnit tests.
• Experience shipping and maintaining background audio or other long-running background work.
• Understanding of tests and how to write them, including what can't be covered by tests.
• Demonstrated ability to introduce changes that stick after you leave a team.
• Comfort with driving changes that require broad team buy-in.
• Track record of building features used by the team, not only for personal speed.
• Ability to describe how your team works with AI agents, not only how you code.

Responsibilities

• Own major features end to end, collaborating with design from decision through release.
• Maintain and improve reliability metrics for key features.
• Review pull requests and provide constructive feedback.
• Unblock the team when progress stalls and ensure efficient decision-making.
• Champion the evolution of shared components when needed.
• Keep code and tooling well-maintained and understandable for new teammates.
• Lead changes in processes and tooling to improve delivery velocity.
• Automate checks to shorten the nightly QA window.
• Plan sprints to focus on remaining decision work and critical risks.
• Balance reviews and approvals to align with system behavior.
• Engage across Product, Design, and Engineering early to surface constraints.
• Handle critical issues, releases, and nightly builds for QA.
• Mentor early-career engineers and provide learning opportunities.
