Job summary

Carnegie Mellon University’s SEI is seeking an AI Security Researcher to develop robust AI security methods, assess vulnerabilities, and reverse engineer AI threats. You will collaborate with elite AI and cybersecurity experts, faculty, and government partners to shape national AI security strategy and publish impactful findings.

We seek candidates with strong AI/ML and cybersecurity expertise, a track record in research, and the ability to mentor others.

Qualifications

• BS in machine learning, cybersecurity, statistics, or related discipline with ten years of experience; OR MS with eight years; OR PhD with five years.
• Strong interest in AI/ML and cybersecurity with intellectual curiosity and impact.
• Experience applying cybersecurity knowledge toward vulnerability research, analysis, disclosure, or mitigation.
• Experience advising on security topics based on research and expert opinion.
• Familiarity with applying AI/ML techniques to practical problems.

Responsibilities

• Develop state-of-the-art approaches for analyzing robustness of AI systems.
• Analyze vulnerabilities in AI systems and how attackers exploit them.
• Reverse engineer malicious code to support high-impact customers and develop new methods and tools.
• Study AI security and vulnerability disclosure ecosystems.
• Evaluate tools and processes from industry and AI security community.
• Uncover and shape assumptions underlying AI security best practices.
• Publish results and aid in testing and transitioning government-funded research.
• Identify opportunities to apply AI to improve cybersecurity research.
