Job summary

Carnegie Mellon University’s Software Engineering Institute (SEI) CERT Division seeks a Senior AI Security Software Engineer to advance security for AI systems within national security contexts. You will develop ML-based prototypes, tools, and scalable systems in close collaboration with researchers and sponsors.

The role emphasizes applying software engineering best practices, analyzing large cybersecurity datasets, and contributing to AI red teaming and adversarial ML initiatives.

Qualifications

  • BS/MS/PhD with required years of experience as specified
  • Understanding of software engineering principles and system design
  • Experience with containerization and microservices architectures
  • Willingness to travel to CMU/ Sponsor sites and conferences (5%)
  • Subject to background check and DoW security clearance

Responsibilities

  • Develop ML-based prototypes, tools, and systems for AI security applications
  • Collaborate with researchers to design and execute experimental AI security solutions
  • Apply software engineering best practices to build scalable, maintainable systems
  • Process and analyze large cybersecurity datasets (malware, NetFlow, incidents)
  • Support AI red teaming and adversarial ML initiatives
  • Translate research concepts into practical capabilities and collaborate with team
