Job summary

Western Governors University (WGU) is seeking a Principal AI Platform Operations Engineer to set the long-term AI operations and platform vision for the AI Platform & Operations team. This role interfaces with executives and shapes the product roadmap while translating frontier AI practices into scalable production systems.

You will define reference architectures, lead high-stakes programs, ensure governance and risk controls, mentor engineers, and represent WGU externally.

Qualifications

• 7+ years deploying AI systems at scale.
• 5 years in AI/ML context alongside data scientists/ML engineers.
• 3+ years building large-scale ML models on cloud platforms.
• Experience defining operational strategy or architectural vision.
• Influence executive leadership on AI operations strategy and investment.
• Cross-functional leadership across engineering, product, data science, legal, and execs.
• Experience with governance, risk, and compliance in AI.

Responsibilities

• Define multi-year AI operations vision and strategy for WGU.
• Establish reference architectures and governance for AI deployment.
• Lead evaluation and adoption of frontier AI operations tooling & infrastructure.
• Drive complex AI operations programs including platform migration and reliability.
• Advise executives on AI operations strategy, risk, and investment priorities.
• Define governance including responsible AI standards and model risk management.
• Sponsor proof-of-concept initiatives for future leverage.
• Represent AI operations externally at conferences and partnerships.
• Develop operating model, hiring criteria, and engineering culture.
• Mentor Staff/Senior engineers and contribute to knowledge building.
• Author technical blogs, whitepapers, and architectural guides.
• Collaborate with legal/compliance/privacy to meet regulatory requirements.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
