Root is driving an AI-powered transformation in auto insurance, building a flexible platform that lets product designers and quantitative scientists test ideas rapidly, deploy to production, and iterate for a delightful customer experience with strong risk management.

We are seeking an experienced software leader to deliver shared AI services, set quarterly priorities, and grow the engineering team across cloud-native stacks. This role supports flexible work locations across the US.

Qualifications

• 5+ years as a software engineer.
• 1+ years leading software teams or major technical initiatives.
• Experience leading team-level technical delivery and decisions in partially defined spaces.
• Deep experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, Terraform) and modern DevOps practices.
• Experience designing secure, observable, reliable systems and tying investments to roadmaps.
• Strong understanding of AI/LLM application and platform patterns, including security implications.
• Ability to identify cross-team dependencies, align stakeholders, and improve delivery outcomes.
• Coaching mindset and track record of growing teammates.
• Clear written and verbal communication to drive alignment and action.

Responsibilities

• Turn a promising AI foundation into a capability Root teams can count on by delivering shared services, tools, deployment patterns, and operational practices.
• Set quarterly technical priorities balancing present needs with foundational investments for future products and workflows.
• Make AI easier to adopt and safer to operate by decisions on reliability, security, observability, cost, and developer experience.
• Bring partners across product engineering, data, security, and platform to resolve dependencies before they slow delivery.
• Create reusable team patterns for architecture, testing, documentation, and production operations to scale decisions beyond a single project.
• Grow the team’s technical capacity by coaching engineers through complex designs and tradeoffs.
• Build trust in the platform by communicating progress, risks, and decisions clearly.
