Job summary

Joby is seeking a Staff Software Engineer with a strong AI focus to bring production-grade AI, computer vision, and automation into manufacturing workflows. You will partner with software, product, operations, and manufacturing teams to identify high-impact opportunities and deploy AI-enabled services and vision systems that enhance inspection, traceability, and process monitoring.

Qualifications

• B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or equivalent practical experience.
• 5+ years of software engineering experience building and operating production systems.
• Strong Python skills and experience building AI/ML, computer vision, or data-intensive systems.
• Experience designing APIs, services, integrations, and maintainable system architectures.
• Experience moving prototypes into reliable production systems, with strong debugging, testing, and observability practices.

Overview

We're looking for a Staff Software Engineer with broad software experience and a strong AI focus to help bring production-grade AI, computer vision, and automation capabilities into the systems that power Joby's manufacturing workflows. In this role, you'll partner closely with software engineers, product, operations, manufacturing, quality, and hardware teams to identify high-impact opportunities, build reliable AI-enabled services, and deploy vision systems that improve inspection, traceability, process monitoring, and decision support. Beyond individual projects, you'll help shape how AI is applied across the team, establishing the patterns and practices that let Factory Systems ship intelligent capabilities with confidence. You'll work in a fast-moving, high-ownership environment at the intersection of software, data, hardware, and aircraft manufacturing—where the output of your work directly improves how we build and scale.

Responsibilities

• Identify, prototype, and deploy AI/ML and computer vision solutions that improve manufacturing workflows — use cases like visual inspection, anomaly detection, and traceability
• Build reliable AI-enabled services, APIs, and data pipelines that integrate internal systems, manufacturing equipment, and operational data
• Build the safeguards that let AI operate in a real factory: measure model quality before and after deployment, and make sure a wrong prediction never silently propagates into a manufacturing decision
• Own end-to-end delivery, from requirements discovery through implementation, deployment, monitoring, and iteration
• Raise the bar for the whole team by leading technical design discussions, mentoring engineers, and establishing the patterns and tooling that let others build and operate AI-enabled features themselves

Required

• B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or equivalent practical experience
• 5+ years of software engineering experience building and operating production systems
• Strong Python skills and experience building AI/ML, computer vision, or data-intensive systems
• Experience designing APIs, services, integrations, and maintainable system architectures
• Experience moving prototypes into reliable production systems, with strong debugging, testing, and observability practices
• Clear communication and a track record of collaborating across disciplines — hardware, operations, manufacturing, or quality — to deliver outcomes

Desired

• Computer vision experience in object detection, segmentation, or image-processing pipelines — ideally applied in manufacturing, robotics, or other hardware-adjacent environments
• Experience operating GPU compute for AI workloads — model serving, inference optimization or on-prem/hybrid infrastructure
• Familiarity with modern ML and LLM tooling: evaluation frameworks, labeling workflows, retrieval-augmented generation, embeddings, or agentic workflow automation
• Experience building internal tools or enterprise applications that integrate with manufacturing data systems and real-time operational processes

Additional Information

Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $137,200 - $206,600/yr.

The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
