Job summary

American Express is hiring a Senior AI Engineer II – Agentic AI to turn complex problems into production-grade agentic systems handling real financial data. You will ship customer-facing LLM-powered features and develop internal AI capabilities, balancing reliability, security, and regulatory compliance.

You will collaborate with product and design, own production systems, and drive end-to-end delivery from design to deployment, ensuring customer outcomes drive engineering decisions.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software engineering experience, including production experience with LLMs or applied ML systems.
• Shipping AI-powered or agentic systems that real users depend on.
• Strong fundamentals across backend systems, data pipelines, and cloud infrastructure.
• Experience with modern LLM tooling and agentic patterns.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and ship LLM-powered and agentic product features that change how customers manage their finances.
• Build agentic AI systems that reason over context, invoke tools, take actions, and recover gracefully from failures.
• Architect production-grade RAG pipelines over sensitive data with strict correctness and auditability requirements.
• Contribute to AI infrastructure, including LLM services and agent orchestration frameworks.
