Job summary

Canals is seeking its first General Counsel to own the commercial contracts function end-to-end, drafting complex enterprise agreements and building scalable templates and playbooks. You will advise across Sales, Product, Engineering and Finance, translating risk and opportunity into plain language while guiding data governance and privacy programs.

You will also manage vendor agreements, triage redlines, and determine when to bring in outside counsel, ensuring velocity without sacrificing rigor.

Qualifications

• JD from an accredited law school and active state bar membership in good standing.
• 4–8 years of experience, including 2–3 years at a top Am Law 100 firm in transactional/commercial practice.
• Deep expertise in commercial contract drafting and negotiation with complex deals.
• Ability to work independently, prioritize demands, and make sound judgments.

Responsibilities

• Draft, negotiate, and close enterprise SaaS/AI agreements, including DPAs.
• Build and maintain contract templates and a negotiation playbook for the sales team.
• Triage inbound redlines and establish contract review SLAs.
• Own day-to-day privacy compliance and data governance strategy.
• Manage vendor and partner agreements, including licenses and services contracts.
• Serve as the embedded legal partner for Sales, Product, Engineering and Finance.
• Identify legal risks early in product development and advise on mitigation.
• Build/refine legal ops infrastructure and contract management tooling.
• Decide when to use outside counsel and manage those relationships.
