Job summary

The State of Iowa’s Department of Public Safety seeks a qualified professional to independently audit out-of-state spend requests and processing of travel reimbursements. You will approve payments, prepare periodic reports, and ensure compliance with state accounting policies.

This role requires meticulous analysis, strong knowledge of accounting principles, and coordination with vendors and internal staff.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent with accounting experience.
• Accounting coursework or training preferred.
• Experience with government accounting practices is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Audit out-of-state spend authorization requests and supporting documents for compliance.
• Approve spend authorizations and travel payments per rules and policies.
• Prepare regular reports to track spend authorizations and expense claims.
• Assist supervisor by analyzing open spend authorizations and answering policy questions.
• Interpret federal/state rules and departmental policies for accounts payable approvals.
• Maintain and initiate accounting transactions for approved payable requests.
• Ensure claims are legitimate, properly coded, and that goods/services are delivered.
• Research discrepancies and provide guidance on procedures and documentation.
• Compile cost accounting data and generate periodic financial reports.
• Maintain an accurate accounting database to monitor contract budgets.
• Identify and resolve discrepancies or errors in claims and payments.
• Handle inquiries from employees and vendors regarding payments.
• Communicate with vendors for vendor setup and address changes.
• Provide monthly budget reports to relevant staff.
• Offer technical assistance on accounting practices for payables.
