Position Summary

The Senior Accountant is a hands-on, full-cycle accounting role in a niche, high‑pressure nonprofit and public funding environment . This position is responsible for end-to-end ownership of the accounting cycle for multiple clients, including AP/AR, payroll, grant accounting, reconciliations, journal entries, and financial statement preparation, while working directly with the Owner/Accounting Manager and client contacts.

This is not basic bookkeeping. We work in a highly regulated, deadline‑driven environment serving nonprofit and public funding clients, where compliance requirements and deadlines are non‑negotiable. The ideal candidate has experience in the post‑award grant space, and is a highly self‑directed, experienced accountant who thrives in this niche, high‑pressure setting, can navigate complex funding and reporting requirements, and delivers accurate, audit‑ready work with minimal oversight.

Key Responsibilities
  • Take full ownership of assigned client books, from daily transactions through month‑end close and financial reporting, with minimal supervision.
  • Perform full‑cycle accounting for assigned nonprofit and publicly funded entities, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank and credit card reconciliations, grant tracking, and general ledger maintenance.
  • Prepare and process payroll for multiple clients, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely submission in accordance with applicable regulations.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports for clients, adhering to nonprofit accounting standards and funder reporting requirements.
  • Post and review journal entries, accruals, and adjustments as needed for accurate period closes.
  • Monitor and maintain clean, organized accounting records across multiple systems and entities.
  • Communicate with clients regarding transaction questions, missing information, deadlines, and financial results.
  • Work comfortably in a niche, high‑pressure environment serving nonprofit and public funding clients, where deadlines and compliance requirements are non‑negotiable.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline accounting processes, improve documentation, and enhance internal controls; make recommendations to the Owner/Accounting Manager and clients.
  • Assist with year‑end close and coordination with external CPAs or tax preparers.
  • Support the Owner/Accounting Manager with ad hoc reporting, analyses, and projects.
Qualifications
  • 5+ years of full‑cycle accounting experience (AP, AR, reconciliations, journal entries, financial statement preparation)
  • Nonprofit experience highly preferred; fund accounting, grants management, and financial reporting.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards (e.g., ASC 958), and grant compliance requirements.
  • Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Xero, or similar) and solid Excel skills.
  • Experience processing payroll for multiple entities and familiarity with relevant payroll regulations.
  • Demonstrated success managing multiple competing deadlines and producing accurate, audit‑ready financials under time pressure.
  • Proven track record of working independently with minimal supervision, managing competing priorities, and consistently meeting strict deadlines.
  • High level of autonomy, self‑direction, and proactive problem‑solving ability; must be able to identify issues, troubleshoot, and resolve them without constant direction.
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and follow‑through in a high‑pressure, compliance‑focused environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; comfortable communicating directly with clients and responding promptly to time‑sensitive requests.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple clients/entities simultaneously, prioritize work effectively, and maintain composure under tight deadlines.
  • This role requires professional‑level accounting judgment, technical expertise, and strong attention to detail—experience beyond basic bookkeeping or household budgeting. Candidates must have demonstrable experience managing complex, regulated accounting functions independently.
What We Offer
  • Competitive compensation
  • Opportunities for training, professional development, and role expansion
  • A supportive, collaborative environment where initiative is valued
  • Flexibility in scheduling (structured or flexible based on your needs)
  • State mandated sick time accrual (1 hour sick leave/30 hours worked)
Work Environment and Schedule
  • Typical schedule: Monday–Friday, full‑time hours; some flexibility may be available based on client needs.
  • Small, collaborative office environment working closely with the Owner/Accounting Manager.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to occasionally lift office supplies (15-20 lbs)
  • Ability to sit at a desk for long periods of time
  • Regular, in‑person attendance at the Canon City office
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person by phone or email
About This Opportunity

This position offers the chance to take full ownership of client accounting functions in a supportive, professional environment serving mission‑driven nonprofit organizations. The Senior Accountant will work directly with the Owner/Accounting Manager and have meaningful impact on client satisfaction, process improvements, and the overall quality of financial reporting in a specialized, high‑stakes sector.

What we need

A seasoned accounting professional who brings true expertise, not someone learning on the job. Our clients depend on accurate, compliant, timely financials to maintain their funding and fulfill their missions. We need someone who understands the weight of that responsibility, works with urgency and precision, and doesn't need hand‑holding to get the job done right.

What sets successful candidates apart

A proven ability to work independently, anticipate problems, meet non‑negotiable deadlines, and maintain the highest standards of accuracy in a fast‑paced, compliance‑heavy environment. If you thrive on ownership, take pride in flawless execution, and have a track record of excellence in nonprofit or regulated accounting, we'd love to hear from you.
