Job summary

The Diocese of Raleigh Office of Education seeks a Senior Accountant to support core accounting operations, month-end close, reconciliations, and financial reporting. Reporting to the Controller, this hybrid role balances independent work with cross-functional collaboration to maintain accurate records and strengthen internal controls across diocesan departments, parishes and schools.

Ideal candidates have a bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance and 3+ years of progressive accounting

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • 3+ years of progressive accounting experience with a strong foundation in general ledger management, fixed assets, accruals, prepaids, and close procedures.
  • High proficiency with Microsoft Excel and modern general ledger/ERP software/accounting systems.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and ability to meet firm deadlines with confidentiality.
  • Proven ability to translate complex financial data for non-finance stakeholders across parishes, schools, and diocesan departments.
  • Professional demeanor reflecting the Diocese of Raleigh’s mission and values.
  • Employment contingent upon passing background and Safe Environment Training.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare monthly journal entries and supporting schedules for month-end and year-end closes.
  • Perform reconciliations for BAA accounts receivable and other general accounts.
  • Administer the organizational credit card program with proper documentation.
  • Provide backup support for billing and operational accounting workflows.
  • Maintain the fixed asset subledger including additions, disposals, and reconciliations.
  • Support internal and external audit requests and reinforce internal controls.
  • Serve as a finance liaison for credit card compliance and expense coding.
  • Perform other accounting tasks as assigned.

Job description

The Catholic Diocese of Raleigh has an immediate need for a detail-oriented and collaborative Senior Accountant to support core accounting operations, month-end close procedures, accounting reconciliations, and financial reporting. Reporting directly to the Controller, this hybrid role balances independent accounting management with cross-functional teamwork to maintain precise financial records, reinforce internal controls, and support sound financial stewardship across diocesan departments, parishes and schools.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare monthly journal entries (payroll, accruals, and prepaid expenses) and build supporting schedules, reconciliations, and documentation to drive smooth month-end and year-end closes.
  • Perform reconciliations for the Bishop’s Annual Appeal (BAA) and general accounts receivable to ensure reporting accuracy and prompt issue resolution.
  • Administer the organizational credit card program to ensure policy compliance and proper documentation.
  • Provide backup support for billing and operational accounting workflows as needed.
  • Maintain full oversight of the fixed asset subledger, including additions, disposals, reconciliations, and required documentation.
  • Support internal and external audit requests, reinforce internal financial controls, and participate in the continuous process improvement initiatives.
  • Serve as an approachable finance liaison, offering clear guidance on credit card compliance, expense coding, and subledger procedures with patience and service-oriented diplomacy.
  • Perform other accounting and finance tasks as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • 3+ years of progressive accounting experience with a strong foundation in general ledger management, fixed assets, accruals, prepaids, and close procedures.
  • High proficiency with Microsoft Excel and modern general ledger/ERP software/accounting systems.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, strong organizational skills with ability to meet firm deadlines, clear written and verbal communication, and strict commitment to professional confidentiality and ethics.
  • Proven ability to translate complex financial data into clear, accessible guidance for non-finance stakeholders across parishes, schools, and diocesan departments.
  • Professional demeanor reflective of the values and mission of the Diocese of Raleigh.
  • Employment is contingent upon passing a criminal background and reference check; must complete Diocese-sponsored Safe Environment Training upon hire.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior accounting experience within a non-profit, religious, or mission-driven organization.
  • Hands-on experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge or similar non-profit accounting platforms.
  • Proven ability to identify operational bottlenecks and strengthen internal accounting procedures.
Location

Hybrid Remote – Primary work performed from home office, with 1 scheduled day per week on-site in Raleigh for team collaboration and operational meetings.
