The Morgan Library & Museum seeks an experienced accounting professional with a strong nonprofit accounting background to join our Finance Department as Senior Accountant. Reporting to the Controller, the Senior Accountant plays a critical role in the integrity and accuracy of the Morgan Library & Museum’s financial operations.This position is responsible for day-to-day, monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting functions.These include preparing general ledger entries, actively participating in the annual audit process, assisting with the monthly closing schedule, and performing higher level accounting functions such as managing the income release from restriction and processing corresponding journal entries.This position works extensively with other members of the Finance team and collaboratively with staff from a wide range of other Morgan departments.
Responsibilities:
General Accounting
·Performs monthly bank reconciliations for multiple accounts.
·Processes journal entries and general ledger reconciliations.
·Works closely with Development staff on reconciliations between Development’s database and Finance’s accounting system.
·Maintains loan receivables, billing accordingly.
·Creates closing book entries, including accruals and reclasses of prepaid expenses.
·Assists in updating the schedule of net assets.
·Updates schedules for acquisitions, project grants, and exhibitions.
·Oversees and maintains the cash reserve.
Audit/Compliance
·Performs a critical role in the annual audit process, interacts with auditors to provide timely responses to audit requests for schedules and general ledger reconciliations.
·Prepares fiscal year end analyses.
·Assists in preparation of annual tax return (Form 990).
·Prepares financial reports for donors.
Investments
·Prepares the pooling schedules for endowment funds.
·Manages the income release from restriction and processes corresponding journal entries.
·Maintains schedules and prepares journal entries for unrealized/realized gains and losses.
Qualifications:
·Knowledge of accounting principles and practices. Skill in financial analysis and reporting.
·Strong computer skills, including advanced skill with Microsoft Office Excel.
·Experience with accounting software, MIP Abila preferred.
·Ability to communicate effectively with others in both written and verbal form.
·Detail-oriented, highly organized, and has experience in fund accounting, endowment management, and the nonprofit sector.
·Ability to allocate time efficiently.
· Ability to work for extended periods at a computer workstation.
· Ability to lift moderately heavy boxes, move items to and from shelves.
· Collegial approach to work with an interest in the Morgan’s mission and programming.
Education and Experience:
·Bachelor’s degree with a major in accounting.
·A minimum of 7 years of experience with increasing scope and responsibility in an endowment-supported nonprofit organization is required.Experience in public accounting a plus.
·Hands-on experience with investment journal entries, audits and fund accounting.
Compensation:
Competitive salary at $85,000 to $95,000 commensurate with experience; Excellent Benefits
