Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience.
  • 3+ years nonprofit accounting and grant accounting experience.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit fund accounting.
  • Experience managing government-funded grants and contracts.
  • Extensive month-end close experience.
  • Experience supporting annual audits and preparing audit schedules.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills including Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, and financial analysis functions.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the financial administration of federal, state, city, and private foundation grants.
  • Monitor grant expenditures to ensure compliance with funding requirements and budgets.
  • Prepare and maintain grant budgets, spending analyses, and reimbursement requests.
  • Perform grant reconciliations and investigate variances.
  • Assist program managers with grant budget monitoring and forecasting.
  • Support grant reporting and maintain documentation for funder reviews and audits.
  • Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes.
  • Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, allocations, and reconciliations.
  • Maintain general ledger accuracy and analyze financial results.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements and supporting schedules.
  • Assist with board, management, and funder reporting requirements.
  • Support annual budgets and forecasts.
  • Coordinate audit schedules and documentation for annual audits and Single Audits.
  • Serve as liaison with external auditors and ensure GAAP compliance.

Job description

LHH is actively recruiting for an experienced Senior Accountant with a strong background in nonprofit accounting, grant management, month-end close, and audit preparation. This position will play a critical role in maintaining the integrity of our client's financial records, ensuring compliance with grant and contract requirements, and supporting the preparation of accurate financial statements.

The ideal candidate will possess a solid understanding of nonprofit accounting principles, fund accounting, grant compliance, and financial reporting, while demonstrating the ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.

Key Responsibilities
Grant Accounting & Compliance
  • Manage the financial administration of federal, state, city, and private foundation grants.

  • Monitor grant expenditures to ensure compliance with funding requirements and approved budgets.

  • Prepare and maintain grant budgets, spending analyses, and reimbursement requests.

  • Perform grant reconciliations and investigate variances.

  • Assist program managers with grant budget monitoring and forecasting.

  • Support grant reporting and maintain supporting documentation for funder reviews and audits.

General Ledger & Month-End Close
  • Lead key aspects of the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process.

  • Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, allocations, and account reconciliations.

  • Maintain general ledger accuracy and ensure timely completion of close activities.

  • Analyze financial results and investigate unusual fluctuations or variances.

  • Reconcile balance sheet and income statement accounts.

Financial Reporting
  • Prepare monthly financial statements and supporting schedules.

  • Assist with board, management, and funder reporting requirements.

  • Support preparation of annual budgets and periodic forecasts.

  • Generate ad hoc financial analyses for leadership.

Audit & Compliance
  • Coordinate audit schedules and supporting documentation for annual financial statement audits and Single Audits.

  • Serve as a primary liaison with external auditors regarding assigned areas.

  • Assist with implementation and monitoring of internal controls.

  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and organizational policies.

Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.

  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience.

  • 3+ years of nonprofit accounting and grant accounting experience.

  • Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit fund accounting.

  • Experience managing government-funded grants and contracts.

  • Extensive month-end close experience.

  • Experience supporting annual audits and preparing audit schedules.

  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills including Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, and financial analysis functions.

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred
  • Experience with nonprofit accounting systems such as Sage Intacct and PASSPort.

  • Experience with New York City, New York State, and Federal grant funding.

Pay Details: $40.00 to $48.00 per hour
