Job summary

Association Headquarters is seeking a Senior Accountant to oversee day-to-day accounting, own the monthly close, prepare complex entries, and mentor junior staff. The role ensures GAAP compliance and strong internal controls while delivering timely financial information.

Working with the Controller and CFO, you will support budgeting, forecasting, audits, and cross-functional initiatives in a nonprofit setting. Hybrid work options are available.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 4-6 years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and full-cycle accounting.
  • Advanced Excel skills (PivotTables, XLOOKUP, SUMIFS, financial analysis).
  • Experience managing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Own the monthly and year-end close process for assigned entities, ensuring financial statements are completed accurately and on schedule.
  • Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules for balance sheet and income statement accounts.
  • Analyze financial results, investigate variances, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements, management reports, and other financial analyses.
  • Review the work of Junior Staff Accountants, providing guidance and coaching.
  • Ensure completeness and accuracy of accounting transactions in NetSuite and other systems.
  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, cash flow analysis, and other financial planning activities.
  • Coordinate audit requests and prepare supporting documentation for external auditors, tax filings, and regulatory reporting.
  • Maintain GAAP compliance and internal controls.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and automate workflows.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional departments to resolve accounting issues.
  • Perform other accounting and finance-related duties.

The Senior Accountant is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day accounting activities while ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial reporting. This role owns the monthly close process, prepares and reviews complex accounting transactions, analyzes financial results, and mentors junior accounting staff.

Working closely with the Controller and CFO, the Senior Accountant serves as a technical accounting resource and plays a key role in maintaining strong internal controls, improving accounting processes, and delivering timely, accurate financial information.

Essential Functions:
  • Own the monthly and year-end close process for assigned entities, ensuring financial statements are completed accurately and on schedule.
  • Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules for balance sheet and income statement accounts.
  • Analyze financial results, investigate variances, and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements, management reports, and other financial analyses as requested.
  • Review the work of Junior Staff Accountants, providing guidance, coaching, and technical support to ensure accuracy and professional development.

Requirements
Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 4-6 years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and full-cycle accounting.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (PivotTables, XLOOKUP, SUMIFS, financial analysis).
  • Experience managing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
Preferred
  • CPA/CMA or CPA/CMA candidate.
  • Experience with NetSuite, Ramp, UKG or similar ERP.
  • Experience within nonprofit, association management, or professional services organizations.
  • Experience supervising or mentoring junior accounting staff.
  • Experience with financial reporting, budgeting, and audit coordination.
