Company Overview

CST Utilities is a growing provider of underground infrastructure construction services, including excavation, directional drilling, and related services supporting water, sewer, natural gas, electric distribution, and telecommunications infrastructure.

Position Summary

CST Utilities is seeking a Senior Accountant to play a key role within the company’s accounting and finance organization. This is a hands-on position with broad exposure across the business and an opportunity to take meaningful ownership of accounting processes across a growing, multi-entity platform.

The Senior Accountant will support and increasingly lead core accounting activities, including month-end close, financial reporting, project and job-cost accounting, fixed assets and heavy equipment accounting, balance sheet management, and operational accounting. The position will work closely with finance leadership, operations, project management, and other functional leaders across the organization.

This role also offers unique exposure to the full lifecycle of a private equity-backed business, including buy-side acquisitions, acquisition integration, platform growth initiatives, and ultimately sell-side transaction readiness and support. As CST continues to acquire and integrate businesses, the Senior Accountant will have the opportunity to support accounting and systems integration, standardization of processes and controls, and consolidation of newly acquired operations into the broader CST platform.

For a high-performing individual, this role provides significant opportunity to expand responsibilities, develop leadership experience, and help shape the accounting function as the company continues to grow.

Key Responsibilities
Accounting & Financial Reporting
  • Support and help lead the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes across multiple entities.
  • Prepare, review, and post journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, and other accounting adjustments.
  • Maintain strong ownership of balance sheet accounts and ensure timely identification and resolution of reconciling items.
  • Support preparation and review of monthly financial statements and management reporting.
  • Perform variance and trend analysis and investigate unusual or unexpected financial results.
  • Ensure accounting activities comply with GAAP, company policies, and established internal controls.
  • Support annual financial statement audits, tax compliance, and other external reporting requirements.
Project & Operational Accounting
  • Maintain a strong understanding of contract billing, job-cost accounting, work-in-process reporting, and project profitability.
  • Partner with project managers and operational leaders to ensure accurate and timely recording of project revenue, costs, accruals, and other project-related activity.
  • Analyze job costs and project financial performance and assist in identifying accounting or operational discrepancies.
  • Support accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, cash application, and other transactional accounting processes as needed.
Heavy Equipment & Fixed Asset Accounting
  • Take ownership of fixed asset and heavy equipment accounting across the platform, including additions, disposals, transfers, depreciation, and account reconciliations.
  • Maintain accurate fixed asset and equipment records and support alignment between accounting records, equipment management systems, and physical assets.
  • Review equipment purchases and other capital expenditures for appropriate capitalization and accounting treatment.
  • Support accounting for equipment financing, leases, trade-ins, disposals, and gains or losses on asset sales.
  • Partner with operations and finance leadership to improve visibility into the company’s equipment fleet, capital expenditures, and asset utilization.
Acquisitions & Integration
  • Support accounting and finance activities associated with acquisitions, including financial diligence, opening balance sheet activities, purchase accounting support, and post-close integration.
  • Assist with integrating acquired businesses into CST’s accounting processes, chart of accounts, financial reporting structure, ERP environment, and internal controls.
  • Help standardize accounting policies and processes across acquired businesses and the broader CST platform.
  • Participate in data migration, systems implementation, and process-improvement initiatives associated with acquisitions.
  • Gain exposure to both buy-side transaction activity and future sell-side preparation, including financial diligence, quality-of-earnings support, data requests, and transaction readiness.
Leadership & Process Improvement
  • Help lead and continuously improve accounting processes across the CST platform rather than simply maintaining existing processes.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen controls, improve reporting accuracy, automate manual activities, and increase the efficiency of the monthly close.
  • Serve as an accounting resource to operations and other functional teams, providing insight into the financial implications of business decisions.
  • Mentor and support junior accounting team members and guide on more complex accounting matters.
  • Develop a broad understanding of CST’s businesses and operations, with visibility into financial reporting, project performance, working capital, capital expenditures, acquisitions, and strategic initiatives.
  • Take on increasing responsibility within the accounting organization as the company and platform continue to grow.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within construction, infrastructure, heavy equipment, field services, or another project-based industry.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting principles.
  • Experience with month-end close, account reconciliations, journal entries, and balance sheet management.
  • Experience with fixed asset and/or heavy equipment accounting strongly preferred.
  • Understanding of contract billing, job-cost accounting, and WIP reporting preferred.
  • Experience working within a multi-entity organization is preferred.
  • Exposure to acquisitions, acquisition integration, ERP implementations, or private equity-backed organizations is a plus.
  • CPA or progress toward CPA certification is preferred but not required.
  • Experience with ERP and construction management systems required; experience with Acumatica, HCSS, and Ramp is preferred.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and strong overall systems aptitude.
Physical Requirements
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
What We’re Looking For

The ideal candidate is more than a technically strong accountant. We are looking for someone who is curious about the business, comfortable taking ownership, and motivated by the opportunity to help build and improve an accounting function within a growing organization.

This individual should be able to move comfortably between detailed accounting work and broader business issues, communicate effectively with both finance and operational leaders, and thrive in an environment where responsibilities and opportunities expand as the company grows.

This is an opportunity to gain broad visibility across a private equity-backed platform, participate directly in acquisitions and integrations, develop leadership experience, and build an understanding of the business well beyond the traditional accounting function.
