Responsibilities

  • Perform day-to-day general ledger accounting activities, ensuring accurate and timely financial information.
  • Support monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial close processes.
  • Prepare and review monthly financial statements, reconciliations, journal entries, and schedules.
  • Manage and analyze job cost accounting, project accounting, and project financial reporting.
  • Prepare and maintain WIP schedules, analyze job costs, margins, and profitability.
  • Assist with percentage-of-completion accounting and project financial reporting in the GL.
  • Review accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and cost coding activity for accuracy.
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts and resolve discrepancies promptly.
  • Collaborate with project managers to improve job cost accuracy, billing, and reporting.
  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and other financial analyses.

Job description

Our client, a growing organization based in Carmel, Indiana, is seeking an experienced Senior Accountant reporting directly to the CFO to support the company’s accounting operations and provide accurate, timely financial information as the business continues to grow. This position will play an important role in maintaining accurate financial reporting, strengthening accounting processes, and supporting project-level financial reporting and analysis.

The ideal candidate will have strong accounting experience, preferably within the construction or project-based industry, with hands-on knowledge of job costing, WIP reporting, general ledger accounting, and month-end close. This is a hands-on position for an accounting professional who can take ownership of key accounting responsibilities, identify opportunities for process improvement, and serve as a trusted resource to both the accounting and operational teams.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform day-to-day general ledger accounting activities, ensuring accurate and timely financial information.
  • Support the monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial close processes.
  • Prepare and review monthly financial statements, account reconciliations, journal entries, and supporting schedules.
  • Manage and analyze job cost accounting, project accounting, and project financial reporting.
  • Prepare and maintain WIP schedules, including analysis of job costs, contract performance, margins, and project profitability.
  • Assist with percentage-of-completion accounting and ensure project financial information is accurately reflected in the general ledger.
  • Review and analyze accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and cost coding activity for accuracy and proper accounting treatment.
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts and investigate and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner.
  • Partner with project managers and operational personnel to improve job cost accuracy, billing, collections, and project financial reporting.
  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and other financial analysis as needed.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, systems, reporting, and documentation.
  • Help maintain effective accounting procedures and internal controls.
  • Support compliance with applicable GAAP and company accounting policies.
  • Provide accounting and financial information to company leadership to support business and operational decisions.
  • Assist with year-end audit and tax preparation activities, including providing schedules and supporting documentation.
  • Serve as a resource and mentor to less-experienced accounting team members.
  • Take ownership of assigned accounting functions and ensure responsibilities are completed accurately and within established deadlines.
Qualifications
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within construction, contracting, or another project-based industry.
  • Strong understanding of general ledger accounting, month-end close, account reconciliations, financial reporting, AP, and AR.
  • Experience with construction accounting, job costing, WIP reporting, percentage-of-completion accounting, and project profitability strongly preferred.
  • Experience with construction accounting software or ERP systems.
  • Strong Excel skills and the ability to analyze and interpret financial and project-level data.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and implement improvements to accounting processes and procedures.
  • Previous experience mentoring or supporting junior accounting personnel preferred.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work effectively with accounting, project management, and operations teams.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple responsibilities, and meet deadlines in a growing, hands-on environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.
