Job description

Who we are
Realize Impact is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission to fund and support impactful startups. We help companies that are tackling the most important social and environmental problems facing our world.

Founded in 2013, our three main programs include philanthropic investing, fiscal sponsorships, and investment partnerships with other nonprofits. Since launching our Philanthropic Investment Grant (PHIG) service in 2020, we have moved $60+ million of philanthropic capital into 300+ impact investments around the globe. All our programs are growing rapidly. To accommodate this momentum, we are bolstering our staffing, systems and capacity.

We bring the rigorous analytical skills we have developed while working in the impact investing industry along with hands-on operational expertise launching and scaling both for-profit and revenue-generating nonprofit organizations. We hold ourselves to high standards of integrity, and are looking to build a best-in-class, diverse and collaborative team to achieve meaningful social and environmental impact around the world. Our current team works remotely from locations on Bainbridge Island, WA, Portland, OR, and New York City.

Who we are looking for
We are looking for a skilled Senior Accountant who will perform accounting operations, ensure we have appropriate controls, and structure financial data to meet our needs. Your responsibilities will include reconciling account balances and bank statements, maintaining the general ledger, preparing month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close procedures, and ensuring accuracy and effectiveness in all accounting tasks.

We expect you to possess both excellent analytical skills and an in-depth knowledge of US GAAP. Realize Impact is an innovative, dynamic organization with rapidly evolving programs. We seek someone who can be flexible and adaptable as we continue to grow and improve.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the integrity of accounting information by recording, verifying, consolidating, and entering transactions for multiple entities and program areas
  • Prepare and record asset, liability, revenue, and expense entries by compiling and analyzing account information including accrued interest on investments and allowances for bad debt
  • Ensure that accounting procedures comply with GAAP requirements
  • Summarize financial status by collecting information and preparing statements of financial position, statements of activities, and other reports as requested from time to time by the Executive Director and Operations Director
  • Full responsibility for all aspects of month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes
  • Help the organization manage its liquidity by reviewing bank balances, deposits, committed funds, and spending on a weekly basis
  • Ensure documentation of and adherence to established internal controls and related procedures, including expense reports, investment documents, and contribution records
  • Review and analyze financial data and create timely and accurate reports on financial status for Realize Impact’s leadership and Board of Directors
  • Review loan agreements and ensure Realize Impact is accurately tracking repayment schedules and obligations
  • Review and recommend modifications to optimize accounting systems and procedures, and work together with Operations Director and Executive Director to make necessary changes
  • Coordinate all aspects of annual audit in partnership with external audit firm and with input from the Operations Director and Executive Director

Qualifications

  • BS degree in Accounting, Finance or other relevant area; a certification such as ACCA, CMA or CPA (even if inactive) will be a bonus. Although not required, preference will be given to candidates with a MA degree in accounting
  • 5-7 years of accounting experience. Preference given to candidates with at least one year of experience working as a Financial Controller, Accounting Supervisor, or Chief or Senior Accountant
  • At least 3 years of accounting experience at a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization or a financial services organization
  • Extensive experience with typical accounting procedures including general ledger functions and the month-end/year-end close process
  • Extensive experience with QuickBooks Online
  • Experience with accounting for equity and debt investments; preference given to candidates also familiar with convertible debt and revenue-based financing
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and communicate financial data and tell “the story behind the numbers”
  • Demonstrated experience with systems automation initiatives and creating efficiencies preferred
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills, with accuracy and attention to detail
