Job description

At Pattern Bioscience, we’re tackling antibiotic resistance, one of the biggest public health challenges of our time. We use machine learning and microfluidics to quickly recognize the bacteria causing an infection and to predict which drugs will cure the infection.

We are seeking an experienced and entrepreneurial Senior Accountant comfortable in the startup, biotech environment to own and execute accounting operations as the primary hands‑on accountant and continue scaling the financial infrastructure needed to support our growth. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys and takes pride in the craft of accounting but is ready for more ownership and variety than their current role offers. You will be responsible for leading and streamlining our core accounting operations, and ensuring the accuracy and integrity of our financial records. Initially, this role will focus on hands‑on accounting functions, especially the monthly close and key compliance activities. As the company grows, there will be opportunities to expand the scope of responsibility. This role is for you if you enjoy building processes, have a strong understanding of the application of finance and accounting principles in a startup, medical device environment, and are passionate about helping startups grow.

How You Will Contribute
Immediate Priorities
  • Own the company’s accounting operations, including general ledger management, contractor‑supported AP/AR, and tax filings
  • Complete the monthly close process, performing the hands‑on accounting to ensure timely and accurate financial statements and internal reports
  • Drive the design and implementation of future‑state accounting processes and systems (e.g., cost accounting, ERP improvements, commercialization readiness)
  • Implement and maintain internal controls and financial systems to ensure accuracy and compliance with US GAAP and other regulations
  • Tax compliance ownership: ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations and reporting requirements
  • Proactively research and resolve accounting discrepancies or anomalies to ensure accurate financials
  • Manage relationships with external auditors and enable a smooth audit process
Other Opportunities
  • Support management with financial reporting, forecasting and operational analysis
  • Assist in budgeting and forecasting
  • Support invoicing, project accounting, and audits for government contracts
  • Contribute to the development of dashboards, consolidated reporting, and other financial tools
We’d Love to Hear from You If You
  • Design, streamline, and communicate processes effectively
  • Excel in tactical execution with strong attention to detail while maintaining a strategic, big‑picture vision
  • Identify ways to remove operational friction and inefficiency, digging into problems and finding creative and compliant solutions
  • Are flexible, adaptable, and comfortable moving through uncertainty to recommend and make decisions
  • Thrive in low‑infrastructure, fast‑changing environments where you switch regularly between areas of responsibility, priorities and levels of work
  • Foster strong cross‑department relationships and pursue collaborative buy‑in
Desired Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field, CPA preferred, with 5-10 years of progressive accounting experience
  • Experience with cost accounting in a manufacturing environment highly preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of US GAAP
  • Proficiency in general ledger functions and the month‑end/year‑end close process
  • Experience with ERP systems (NetSuite preferred); ERP implementation experience a plus
  • Experience with government contracts is a plus
  • Experience in and comfort with pre‑revenue startups is a plus
Benefits
  • Paid Time Off
  • 401K
  • Health Insurance
  • The opportunity to make a global impact
