Job summary

Ocean City Public Works is seeking a capable individual to perform construction, maintenance and repair work on beaches, streets, sewers and water systems. The role may lead a very small unit and may require operating heavy maintenance equipment such as loaders and backhoes.

The position emphasizes organization, safety, and cooperation with colleagues. A valid NJ driver's license may be required for vehicle operation and related duties.

Qualifications

• Two (2) years of experience in construction, maintenance and repair of streets, sewers, water, beaches or public works facilities.
• Experience operating road or beach maintenance equipment is preferred.
• Ability to read, write, and communicate in English.

Responsibilities

• Organizes assigned work and develops effective work methods.

• Gives assignments to employees in a very small unit.
• Performs maintenance and repair of water mains, pipes, valves, pumps, hydrants and other water service equipment.

Performs responsible, varied work involved in the construction, maintenance and repair of beaches, dune systems, streets, sewers, water, sanitation and other public works facilities, and/or takes the lead in a very small unit; may be required to operate, check, service and make minor repairs to trucks and other road or beach maintenance equipment including but not limited to loaders, tractors with rake attachments, street sweepers, backhoes and other beach maintenance equipment; performs other related duties as required.

Ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication. Requirements

Two (2) years of experience in the construction, maintenance and repair of streets, sewer, water, beaches, sanitation or other public works facilities or similar heavy construction.

Special Requirements

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position. Appointees may be required to possess a valid Commercial driver's license (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle being operated.

Physical Demands

Ability to work for long periods of time in emergency situations and remain on the job until all repairs have been made.
