Job summary

Ocean City Public Works seeks a maintenance worker to perform routine upkeep and repair tasks across City facilities. Under supervision of a supervisor, you may serve as lead for a small group of seasonal laborers and support public events. Responsibilities include masonry, carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, turf maintenance, and related trades.

You may operate light vehicles and must follow safety practices and directions in English. Valid NJ driver's license preferred.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of standard tools, materials, methods, practices, hazards and safety precautions in maintenance.
• Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written directions; read, write, speak, and understand English.
• Valid New Jersey State Driver's license preferred; minimum age 18.

Responsibilities

• Performs routine maintenance and repair in masonry, carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, turf maintenance and related trades.
• May drive a truck or car to transport people and supplies; may set up for and clean up after special events.
• May lead a small group of seasonal laborers as a lead capacity.

Definition

Under supervision of a Supervisor, performs a variety of routine maintenance and repair tasks involved in maintaining public facilities, may serve in a lead capacity over a small group of seasonal Laborers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Performs a variety of routine maintenance and repair tasks in one or more of the following areas: masonry, plastering, carpentry painting, plumbing, sheet metal, electrical, glazing, mechanical, HVAC, turf maintenance, or other types of maintenance work; may drive a truck or car to transport people and supplies; may set up for and clean up after special events; performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

Some Knowledge of: the standard tools, materials, methods, practices, occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in performing general maintenance and repair work.

Ability to: understand, remember, and carry out oral and written directions; take safety precautions in performing the work; obtain, store, safeguard, distribute, and properly use equipment, materials, and supplies; maintain simple records; learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units; read, write, speak and understand English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.

Special Requirements

Valid New Jersey State Driver's license preferred. Minimum age requirement: 18.

Tools and Equipment Used

Powered and non-powered hand tools, turf maintenance equipment, may drive a car or pickup truck.

Physical Demands

Position requires employee to: Continuously use hands to finger, handle, or feel, talk or hear, and lift up to 10 lbs.; frequently stand, walk, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch, reach with hands and arms, and lift up to 25 lbs.; and occasionally sit, smell for odors, and lift up to 50 lbs. Special vision requirements: Close, distance, color, peripheral, depth, and ability to adjust focus.

Position requires employee to: Frequently work near moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and in outdoor weather conditions such as sun, heat, wind, and rain; and occasionally work in high precarious places, be exposed to vibration and risk of electrical shock. Employee is exposed to loud noise and may work in small areas in awkward bodily position.
