Job summary

Fervo Energy seeks a Seismologist to lead design, deployment, and processing of surface and borehole seismic networks for its EGS projects. You will own geophones and seismometers, set geometry, calibrate, and run automated detection and relocation to produce a high-quality earthquake catalog.

Requirements include a PhD in Geophysics or closely related field, proficiency with HypoDD and GrowClust, Python (ObsPy, NumPy/SciPy), and willingness to travel up to 20% to field sites.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Geophysics, Seismology, Applied Mathematics, or closely related field. No minimum years required; recent graduates welcome.
• Proficiency with HypoDD and GrowClust for relocation and uncertainty assessment.
• Solid grounding in surface and borehole seismic monitoring and instrument calibration.
• Knowledge of moment tensor inversion, magnitude estimation, and stress drop estimation.
• Understanding of induced seismicity, Gutenberg-Richter statistics, and hazard concepts.
• Python proficiency for seismic data processing (ObsPy, NumPy/SciPy, pandas) and Linux scripting.
• Ability to build velocity models and defend earthquake catalogs.

Responsibilities

• Design, deploy, and maintain surface and borehole seismic networks.
• Set network geometry and instrumentation for detection and location accuracy.
• Own instrument response, calibration, timing, and data quality control.
• Run automated detection, phase picking, and event association.
• Build and maintain velocity models and station corrections.
• Manage field campaigns, vendor scopes, and data delivery standards.
• Run HypoDD for double-difference relocation and GrowClust for hierarchical clustering.
• Interpret relocated seismicity for fracture geometry and reservoir models.
